Information checked: September 9, 2026.
Most Social Security retirement, survivor, and disability payments follow a Wednesday schedule based on the beneficiary's birth date. Older beneficiaries and people who receive both Social Security and SSI can follow different rules.
Key answer: For the standard 2026 schedule, birthdays on the 1st through 10th are generally paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th through 20th on the third Wednesday, and the 21st through 31st on the fourth Wednesday. People who received Social Security before May 1997, or receive both Social Security and SSI, should use SSA's special schedule instead.

The birthday rule
| Birth date | Usual payment day |
|---|---|
| 1st-10th | Second Wednesday |
| 11th-20th | Third Wednesday |
| 21st-31st | Fourth Wednesday |
The relevant birthday is generally the insured worker's birthday. A spouse or survivor receiving on another person's earnings record may therefore have a schedule that does not match their own birthday.
Exceptions to the Wednesday schedule
SSA's calendar uses a separate rule for beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 and for people receiving both Social Security and SSI. In that group, Social Security is generally paid on the third of the month and SSI on the first.
SSI by itself generally pays on the first of the month. These dates move when the scheduled day is a weekend or federal holiday.

| April | 8 | 15 | 22 |
| May | 13 | 20 | 27 |

Weekends and federal holidays
When a scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA generally pays on the preceding business day. This can make two SSI payments appear in one calendar month when the next month's first day is not a business day. It is an early payment, not an extra benefit.
What to do when payment is missing
First confirm the expected date using SSA's calendar or your online Social Security account. Check whether the bank has posted a pending deposit and whether your direct-deposit information changed. SSA's printed calendar says to allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency when a payment is not received on the expected date.
Report suspected theft or an incorrect account immediately. Do not give login credentials to a caller claiming to “release” a benefit payment.
Frequently asked questions
Is the date based on my birthday?
Usually, but auxiliary and survivor benefits may follow the insured worker's birthday, and special schedule groups do not use the normal Wednesday rule.
Why did SSI arrive in the prior month?
If the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA may pay on the preceding business day.
Can a bank post the deposit at a different time?
Yes. The SSA payment date is the federal schedule; a bank's posting time can vary.
Final checklist
Identify the benefit type, determine whether a special schedule applies, use the official 2026 calendar, and verify the payment in your SSA and bank accounts before reporting it missing.
