Search for the best bank in Korea for foreigners and you will find confident rankings. Treat them carefully. Fees, app languages, branch coverage and product eligibility change, and they change per bank, per branch, per account type and per residence status.
So this guide does not name a winner. It gives you the dimensions that actually differ, so you can compare the two or three banks realistically available to you and pick on your own circumstances.
A bank that is excellent for a Seoul office worker sending money home monthly may be a poor fit for a student in a smaller city who mostly needs an ATM near campus.
Key takeaway
Compare on seven dimensions rather than on reputation: branch access where you actually live, English support at that branch, app language coverage, international transfer route and cost, ATM network and off-hours fees, account and card fees, and whether the bank accepts the identification you hold. Verify each on the bank's own current pages, because none of these is fixed.

The seven dimensions that matter
| Dimension | The question to ask | Why it varies |
|---|---|---|
| Branch access | Is there a branch near my home, work or campus? | Networks are uneven outside metropolitan areas |
| English support | Does that branch have English-speaking staff? | Support is branch-level, not bank-level |
| App language | Is the app itself in English, or only a separate foreigner app? | Some banks run a separate multilingual app with fewer functions |
| International transfers | What is the total cost, including the exchange margin? | The headline fee is rarely the whole cost |
| ATM network | Where are the free ATMs and what happens after hours? | Off-hours and other-bank fees differ |
| Account and card fees | Maintenance, card issuance, replacement | Product-specific |
| Identification accepted | Will this bank open an account on my status? | Set by each bank |
Start with the branch, not the brand
The single most useful filter is geography. You will visit a branch for the account opening, most likely again to remove a transaction limit, and possibly again for a card or a document. A bank with a strong national reputation and no branch within an hour of you is the wrong choice.
Call the specific branch and ask whether English-speaking assistance is available and on which days. Coverage is a branch staffing matter, so a bank-level claim on a website does not tell you what you will find at your counter.
Mobile residence card support
One dimension that is documented centrally is acceptance of the mobile foreigner residence card. The Financial Services Commission announced that from 21 March 2025 foreign residents could use mobile foreigner residence cards to open accounts and conduct financial transactions at six banks: Shinhan, Hana, iM, Busan, Jeonbuk and Jeju.
If a mobile identification route matters to you, that list is a genuine differentiator. Recheck it before deciding, since participation can expand after an announcement.

If you send money abroad regularly, this dimension can outweigh everything else. Compare the total cost, not the advertised fee:
- The sending fee charged by your bank
- The exchange rate margin, which is often the largest component and is not shown as a fee
- Intermediary bank charges on the route
- Any receiving fee at the destination
- Whether the app can complete the transfer, or whether a branch visit is required
Run one identical test amount through each candidate's own quote before committing. A bank with a higher stated fee and a tighter exchange margin can be cheaper overall.
The comparison worth writing down
Before you choose, fill in this table for the two or three banks genuinely available to you. If you cannot fill a cell from the bank's own official page or its customer line, that is itself useful information.
| Question | Bank A | Bank B |
|---|---|---|
| Nearest branch and travel time | ||

| App language and function coverage | ||

Frequently asked questions
Which bank is best for foreigners in Korea?
There is no answer that holds for everyone, and any source giving one without knowing your city, status and transfer needs is guessing. Compare on the seven dimensions above.
Are the big national banks always better?
Not necessarily. Branch density near you and the specific branch's language support usually matter more than size.
Can I hold accounts at more than one bank?
Generally yes, and some residents do so deliberately, for example one for salary and one for transfers abroad. Each account is opened on its own terms and may carry its own limits.
Is an internet-only bank an option?
Eligibility depends on the identity verification each provider can perform on your status, so treat it as a question to ask rather than an assumption.
How often should I recheck fees?
Before any large or recurring transaction. Fee schedules and exchange margins are updated by banks without any obligation to notify a comparison article.
Summary
The right bank is a local question. Branch reachability and the language support at your actual counter decide most of the day-to-day experience.
Fill in the comparison table from official sources, price one real transfer, and choose from that. Do not choose from a ranking, including this one, because none of them knows your situation.
